Wegmann Wins GP Indurain

The GP Indurain pays tribute to the last true Patron

Fabian Wegmann, defending German national champion, won his biggest race since the German championships in Spain at the GP Miguel Indurain. It was Wegmann's second time winning the race, as he was victorious in the 2006 edition. Wegmann will be active in the Wallonian classics in late April, and the GP Indurain win will bolster his confidence and his team's morale heading into the rest of the year.

The many short climbs of the day played right into Wegmann's hands as he once again took the win

Wegmann has always been viewed as a rider who was capable of great things, and his win in last year's German nationals confirmed that he is beginning to ride into the best years of his career. While his teammate Stephan Schumacher will be the clear leader in the hilly classics, Wegmann, a la Gert Steegmans at Quick Step, will be a great second option if his German compatriot isn't up to snuff.

"Weggy's" climbing prowess helped him again at the GP Indurain

Wegmann had a tough Tour of California to start his season, as he was struck down by the sickness that swept through the peloton throughout the week. He abandoned the race and took some time off to recover before preparing for the GP Indurain. His quick accelerating style on small to mid-size climbs worked perfectly to his advantage at the GP, as he was able to distance the field fo the win. His team, Gerolsteiner, will celebrate their biggest win of the year so far, and will look ahead to the hillier classics with anticipation.
