The Italian continental team Amore & Vita cycling squad took a surprise victory in the first race of the Commerce Bank Triple Crown, as the Ukranian Yuri Metlushenko took the win with an explosive sprint, winning ahead of Health Net's Karl Menzies nd Jelly Belly's Brad Huff. The American Tyler Farrar was looking good for the win, but had to swerve across the entire road to avoid crashing, narowly missing slamming into the protective metal bariers.
The win was a great one for the smaller Italian outfit, as the trip from Italy now has been more than worth the trip. Metlushenko was beside himself with happiness, as this must have been his biggest victory in along while. On the podium the Ukranian was literally jumping or joy, and was unable to stop smiling through the press conference.
Looking ahead, Metlushenko is probably done winning, as the bigger teams in the race will push the pace to get some results. Expect High Road, Slipstream, CSC, and Liquigas to increasingly show themselves at the front, attempting to take the win over the course of the rest of the week. Other teams to watch include Colavita, Health Net, and Toyota United, whose "Weapon of Mass Destruction" Dominique Rollin took it decidedly easy, probably saving himself for the bigger races later in the week.
