And the hits just keep on coming. Alberto Contador has swept all of the "Euro Primes" thus far, and his streak continues as EuroPeloton recognizes the Spanish super star as the best climber of 2008. Contador showed, like he did in 2007, that climbing is his biggest talent. Contador is a good time trialist as well, but the differences he makes over his rivals come on mountain stages.
In fact, with exception to teammate Levi Leipheimer, there weren't many other riders who were able to stay with Contador when the road got steep. Riccardo Ricco showed well at the Giro, but has since been suspended for using CERA. So, because of his utter dominance on the steeps, Contador is the 2008 climber of the year.
Honorable mention for climber of the year goes to Carlos Sastre, who was able to distance all of his key rivals at the Tour de France on the Alpe d'Huez stage, setting the foundation for his eventual win of the French event. Unfortunately for Sastre though, the Astana team wasn't there. Because of this fact, and also due to Sastre being thwarted in the mountains by Contador at the Vuelta, he lost out on the 2008 climber of the year award.
