EuroPeloton Cycling Awards 2008: Best Young Rider, Mark Cavendish

Another Euro Prime for Cavendish

After winning the "Euro Prime" for best sprinter of 2008, Mark Cavendish is also our choice for most promising young rider for the 2008 season. Cavendish notched 18 wins in 2008, including six grand tour stage victories. And at only 23 years old, Cavendish will be around for a long time to come, dominating bunch finishes for the foreseeable future. He will be one of the focal points for the Columbia team next year, and he should be able to net at least 20 wins in 2009.

Honorable mention in this category goes to Rabobank's Robert Gesink, and the Liquigas duo of Roman Kreuziger and Vincenzo Nibali. Kreuzinger won the Tour de Swiss this year, and also added a 13th overall in the Tour de France to his resume. His teammate Nibali was 10th at Leige-Bastogne-Liege, and went top 20 overall in both the Giro and the Tour de France. Ivan Basso, the new team leader of Liquigas, will count on Nibali and Kreuziger as he tries to win the Giro after a two year suspension.

I think we'll see Mark going for the Green jersey in the Tour next year since they'll be no Olympics there to distract him. There's only one man who can seriously challenge him and that will be Boonen. Lets hope Tom is a good boy and lays off the recreationals so we can all enjoy a good battle between the two of them.
