One of EP's favorite cycling fan sites without a doubt is Podium Cafe. Led by in-the-know writers and passionate fans, Podium Cafe is a great destination for anyone looking to increase their cycling knowledge while keeping abreast of the daily goings on in the pro cycling world.
Over the past several season the Cafe has hosted a Virtual Director Sportif competition---essentially a fantasy cycling league for fans to test their skills against other fans across the world. The way it works is pretty simple, and everything is explained on the site. Basically, you as a virtual director, chooses a team of 25 riders with an allotment of 150 total points to "spend" on your riders. Each rider then is assigned a point value, as high as 32 (Contador) and as low as 1 (lesser known domestique type riders). The trick is to create a roster of 25 riders using all of the 150 pints allocated to create your own "super team."
Once all teams are chosen, the competition is updated after each race. The season begins with the Het Volk (sorry still not willing to call it the Het Niewsblad) race and runs through the fall with the Giro di Lombardia closing out the season. Podium Cafe tracks all points and makes it easy to follow along, and they have announced that they'll have an even better VDS platform for 2010. Also, it is important to mention that to enter the competition is FREE!!!
This is your chance as a cycling fan to put your cycling knowledge to the test. So sign up at Podium Cafe and take part in the 2010 VDS competition. Who knows, maybe you'll be able to brag at the end of next year that you are one of the smartest (and shrewdest) cycling fans in the world!
